Winter Driving in Iiyama

Iiyama is a heavy-snow area. A properly equipped car helps, but safe winter travel also depends on road conditions, careful driving and knowing when not to continue.

01

Check the car before booking

Confirm that winter tyres are fitted for your dates. Ask whether 4WD is guaranteed and whether chains are supplied, rented or sold separately.

At Nico Nico Rent a Car Iiyama Station, all vehicles are 4WD and winter tyres are standard during the winter season. Final equipment and availability must still be checked when booking.

Snow changes stopping distance

Four-wheel drive can help a vehicle move and climb, but it does not remove the risk of sliding while braking or turning. Leave a much larger gap, slow down before corners and avoid sudden steering, acceleration and braking.

Black ice may look like wet asphalt. Bridges, shaded sections and tunnel entrances can freeze first, especially early in the morning and after sunset.

03

Check the route, not only the destination

Weather in Iiyama city may be different from conditions at Madarao, Shiga Kogen or Myoko. Check road closures, live cameras and information from your accommodation before departure.

Clear snow from the roof, windows, lights and number plates. Allow time for fuelling and return, and do not attempt a mountain road if you are not confident.

What should I do in heavy snow?

Check official road information, follow restrictions and delay or change the trip if conditions are beyond your experience.
