Planning the Shin-etsu Trail from Iiyama Station

The Shin-etsu Trail is a long-distance route along the Nagano–Niigata border. Even for a day hike, decide where you will enter and how you will return before choosing how far to walk.

KEY PLAN
Arrange both ends
01

Choose one section first

The route is not a simple loop. Each section has different trailheads, elevation, distance and transport. Match the official map to your experience, fitness and available daylight.

The Shin-etsu Shizenkyo Activity Center on the first floor of Iiyama Station is listed as a visitor centre with trail information, official maps and equipment rental.

02

Arrange the way home in advance

The Madarao end has bus access from Iiyama Station, while other trailheads may have no public transport. A taxi or accommodation transfer may require advance booking.

If driving, confirm legitimate parking and how you will return to the parked car after a one-way section.

03

Snow season is winter mountaineering

The official FAQ says a winter traverse should be treated as general winter mountaineering. Check trail opening, snow, fallen trees, water and weather, and do not continue beyond your skills.

  • Carry the official map
  • Read the current trail report
  • Carry rain gear, water and food
  • Share the route and finish time
